Space Coast Credit Union Marks One Year of Cancer Support Program
July 9, 2010
In May 2009, Space Coast Credit Union unveiled its Pink Visa® Platinum Credit Card, allowing credit union members the opportunity to donate a portion of their rewards points earned for purchases made with the cards to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. One year later, SCCU members have donated a total of $17,473.15 to support breast cancer research.
Members earn rewards points for each purchase made with their Platinum Credit Card through the credit union’s unique Scorecard Rewards® program. Each month, half of the points earned on Pink Platinum Credit Cards have been converted to cash and donated to the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation. Founded in 1993, the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation is dedicated to ending breast cancer through research, advocacy, and education. The credit union chose the Foundation as the recipient agency because each dollar it receives is kept in the state of Florida, where all of the credit union’s branches and the vast majority of its members are located. “In selecting a recipient agency, we wanted to ensure that the communities we serve would directly benefit from the donations made by our members,” stated Tim Antonition, the credit union’s Executive Vice President of Retail Operations.
Space Coast Credit Union is a member-owned financial cooperative serving the needs of over 360,000 members throughout Florida. The credit union’s approach to charitable support, including the Pink card program, is reflective of this cooperative structure. “Rather than making donation decisions on behalf of our members, we seek ways to facilitate giving and allow our members to make the decision,” stated CEO and President Doug Samuels. “The pink card program and our Education Donation program allow members to act cooperatively to make many modest donations that add up for a large impact. The credit union simply processes the donation for the participating members.”
In this case, the process of adding up the individual donations resulted in the second-largest corporate donation to the Foundation during its 2009 – 2010 fiscal year.
The Pink card charity donation program provides a convenient way to support a cause that is important to the cardholder. The donation is generated as the card is used to make purchases. Cardholders earn reward points for themselves as well. Cathy Cobb, the credit union’s Card Services Manager, said that “Members using the card often state that the greatest benefit is that they can generate a donation without having to actually spend any cash. That makes it painless and affordable to donate.”
