Perspectives April 2008

Douglas R. Samuels, President/CEO

I was recently privileged to witness a U.S. Army Infantry graduation at Fort Benning, Georgia. I was struck by two things. First, was the realization that every one of these young men had volunteered to serve their country in a time of war. Second, the graduation concluded at 10 a.m., and only an hour later I saw many of the new graduates boarding buses with all of their belongings to be transported to combat units in the war.

This experience was both exhilarating and humbling for me. I was impressed with the skill and care exercised by those who are responsible for training these soldiers to prevail in life–and–death circumstances. I was impressed by the willingness of these intelligent young soldiers to knowingly put themselves in harm’s way on behalf of the American people. I was humbled to witness the most precious resources of this nation being sent forth to preserve our freedom and the freedom of others. I was further humbled to observe the modest circumstances of the families of many of these soldiers who are trying to make ends meet while dealing with the stress of separation and danger.

This experience caused me to reflect with great gratitude on all of those who currently serve in our armed services, and those who have served in the past. To do what you are called upon to do by your nation is a selfless gesture that truly stands out in contrast to the fierce individualism that makes Americans who we are.

This experience further strengthened my resolve to assure that the credit union continues to provide a value to our members who live in modest conditions. Space Coast Credit Union was chartered in 1951 to serve the needs of its members: working people. Over the decades, many of the jobs have changed, but the pressure on working families has only increased. We have continued to modify and refine our offerings in order to continue to meet the needs of our members amidst these pressures.

The rarest commodity in most working homes is time. The credit union has changed how it does business in order to deliver our members more of this precious commodity. Our goal is to accurately assess the needs of our members and deliver products and services quickly to meet those needs.

Most of our members are working people trying to make ends meet while juggling several priorities with very little time. Our service offerings are geared around them in order to serve them quickly and competently. Our goal is to provide friendly, accurate and efficient service and give them back some of their day.

I am proud of our employees who demonstrate a service attitude, and of our managers and trainers who equip them to serve our members. Our trainers delivered almost 20,000 hours of training to our employees in 2007 to strengthen their abilities to serve. Our front-line service training is difficult and long, but we have determined that there is no shortcut to developing the knowledge and skill required to be a strong financial resource to our members.

Our focus is continuous, and our commitment is total, in serving the changing needs of our members. It is what our members expect and deserve and, in these troubled and uncertain economic times, it is what I am dedicated to ensuring they receive.
